Glass Polish Finish Explain and Options

Glass Cold Working

Cold working involves manually polishing the glass using a series of abrasive grits, progressing from coarse to fine. Each successive grit refines the surface to a smoother finish, preparing it for the next stage of polishing.

With specialized glass polishing equipment, a skilled artisan can effectively eliminate a wide range of imperfections, including scratches, mineral deposits, and spatter damage from glass surfaces.

Standard Glass Finish

During glass fusing processes, fiber paper is used to separate the glass from the kiln shelf. This can impart a unique finish to fused glass artwork.

The resulting finish may exhibit a subtle texture while preserving the glass's transparency, with some pieces displaying a slight opacity.

All glass pieces feature a polished finish on three sides.

High Polish Finish (on the back of the sculptures)

Glass grinding is performed on flat metal surfaces to achieve a smooth and refined finish. This abrasive machining process utilizes a rotating wheel embedded with coarse particles (grinding wheel) to remove material from a workpiece, resulting in a flat or smooth surface.

To achieve a pristine, polished finish, the glass undergoes sanding with diamond discs of varying grits until it progresses to the polishing stage. For a 7 to 9-inch glass piece, this multi-step process using 7 different discs can take between 35 to 45 minutes per part. The final result is a completely polished and transparent finish.

All glass pieces feature a polished finish on three sides. This service is specifically for the backs of all sculptures.
